I loved this book! I read it straight through and was disappointed when it ended. I loved that although Ms. Margo had many trials in her life she was able to overcome and triumph because of her own choices. She showed us that being a woman does not mean you have to succumb to a male dominant world. What I took away from this book was that whatever your station in life is only you have the power to make something of yourself. I will say that this book really made me take a hard look at my life and I realized I was not interested in just settling for where I was. I made a drastic change in my career and could not be happier!!
A person must have a special inner spirit from heaven to be able to endure such a climb. I've spent a lot of time in Mississippi and it is still a difficult place. But to rise up in the years following the depression and for a female to do it is a tall order. Not only did she manage to lift herself in the face of so much adversity but she has helped so many others along the way and in so many different ways. To her familiy and to her friends she is very very special. I know this because she's been my friend since I was a ten year old kid. And this terrific book only begins to tell the story of this special lady. THANKS, Summer, for sharing your story and your life.
This brief story encapsulates 83 years of turning every hardship, challenge, and loss into a stepping – stone for survival and success. Margo’s story is a story of choice; she chose to turn each egregious situation into a catalyst to build a life for her family...and then, for herself. She did not excuse herself because she lacked a formal education or had been a survivor of neglect and emotional abuse from having an incompetent father. Margo did not waste her time wishing for circumstances to change; she changed the circumstances. She embraced every strength (looks, tenacity and perseverance, to name a few) she possessed to learn and build from her accomplishments and mistakes, and continued to push forward…”no turning back” or allowing herself to become entrenched in the circumstances. While reading the book and now, reflecting upon Margo as a human being, I, as a reader, and as a niece, can only imagine the pain, the hurt, the embarrassment, and the sadness she has lived alone with all of these years. However, the greatest message I read in this story is the one of accountability and responsibility. Margo was accountable and responsible for her choices. She learned to re-create herself through her choices. I can “hear” Margo saying that every person has the ability to choose an attitude, action, or both if he or she wants something more from life. Further, Margo might add that there is no room or time to allow weakness, hardships, or excuses to dominate one’s circumstances. Today, Margo continues to build houses, lease properties and is protective and loving towards her family and friends as she remains in control of her destiny…even as she extends her invitation, By Invitation Only.
