This is an extraordinarily well written and entertaining story! This book is the best in the series! They keep getting better and better! I laughed out loud so many times during Violet's adventurous murder mystery and never knew what to expect or what was coming up next! The new characters fit very well into the story and I especially liked the interaction between Violet and Stone Hawke. I enjoy the way aunt Zoe's secrets are slowly revealed throughout the series!

An Ex to Grind in Deadwood Deadwood Humorous Mystery Book 5 edition by Ann Charles CS Kunkle Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

Violet is a 30 something single mother who is immature, has anger issues, uses juvenile sarcasm for humor, constantly reminds us that she gave birth to twins, and lies a lot. Like all of us Violet is doing the best she can with a long line of bad luck, some of which can be blamed on her poor decision making skills. Apparently she's good in the sack, and cannot concentrate on much of anything but her lust for Doc. Violet is the type of co-worker we dread to be saddled with. If she spent as time trying to sell houses as she spends on all her curricular activities, she could make some money and get a place of her own.

So why read the book? It is, at times, actually humorous, has other characters worth caring about, a story line so far fetched that it is interesting if you can suspend a need to make sense of it all. I have been listening to the narrated story and the narrator is often terrible due to the peculiar accents she tries to carry off.

All in all I am enjoying the story, can't stand the narration but I listen to it at work and when I concentrate on the spreadsheets I tune out the story then back up and re-listen. The first 4 books take place in a few months time so do not expect to see any emotional growth in the characters, try not to let the pages and pages of mind blowing sex bore you, and do not look for reasons of why or how Violet has endeared herself to so many otherwise intelligent characters and you will be able to move on to the next book.
The latest installment in this great series is fast paced, fun, and builds off of books 1-4 beautifully. The characters are rich and interesting. At the start, I enjoyed the pace and humor of the books, but with each new book, Ann Charles continues to build up a fascinating mythology.
I got hooked on this series when I "purchased" the first book (Nearly Departed in Deadwood) for free. I knew it was a ghost story of sorts, which is not my usual genre. Once I started reading, I was completely absorbed with the characters - they quickly became friends. I was sad to finish, and leave my new friends behind, and I anxiously awaited the next book. THEN I saw the books described as 'horror' - and I totally don't do horror. Personally, I consider it a quirky romance series, with a little spookiness thrown in. Believe me when I tell you that you will love this series.
“An Ex to Grind in Deadwood” is Ann Charles’ latest book on the wild and crazy activities in Deadwood, Arizona. This fast moving humorous mystery key protagonist, Violet Parker is a single mother raising two children. She is a Realtor for Calamity Jane Realty and she finds many life threatening issues developing at those listed properties of hers she thinks are haunted. Charles provides her readers with Violet’s back story including all of the unique situations of the first four books.

Readers will find several support protagonists - some are friends and working associates of Violet and the other support characters come from the paranormal world or as “Doc” calls them - ghosts. All of the support protagonists have well developed back stories. The key support characters are “Doc”, a financial adviser and is Violet’s lover, Old Man Willis Harvey, Violet’s body guard, Violet’s best friend Natalie, Violet’s Aunt Zoe, and detective Cooper. There are all sorts of humorous characters and some antagonists who add to the chaos that Charles weaves throughout this suspense filled mystery.

The plot continues to develop around Violet’s life and how she deals with work, murder, family issues, and ongoing problems with Violet’s estranged family and ex-boyfriends. Violet’s biggest problem are those coming out of the information she finds as she and “Doc” talk with ghosts who live in properties she has listed. They share in the formation on murders past and present. Violet has to find a way to pass her ghost stories on to Detective Cooper and keep him from throwing her into the jail for being involved in the murders.

Violet is working hard to manage her life and raise her children when people from the past keep adding issues and concerns challenging Violet at every turn. Her sister and ex-boyfriend upset Violet’s day-to-day life. Charles' well-developed story never slows down and she is always helping readers understand to expect the unexpected.Violet’s Aunt Zoe provides her moral support as well as a home to raise her two children. In Charles’ new book we see a new side of Aunt Zoe adding to the plot’s chaos with her strange antics and her connection to the paranormal world.

This murder mystery is filled with action and twist and turns that will appeal to Charles’ readers. I enjoy how Charles adds intrigue and surprises throughout the story, never giving her readers a hint as what is going to happen next.

“An Ex to Grind in Deadwood” takes readers on a ride through Deadwood where they will find visits from ghosts, unpredictable mystery almost around every curve, and well developed characters both good and bad. Charles makes sure readers know who the players are and their roles in this page turning mystery. Before readers arrive at the spine tingling end they will accept all the characters from Deadwood both alive and dead as a gang of unique and interesting people. Without hesitation I recommend “An Ex Grinds in Deadwood” as a must read and Ann Charles earns my 5 star ranking
