Not badly written, but... If you're hoping for a vicarious escape to the heavenly Caribbean, keep looking. At one point Beaupre quotes an old salt's bromide about sailing consisting of long periods of boredom followed by short periods of terror, and that aptly describes his journeys in this book. The near-misses with shoals, ships and storms made appreciate day-sailing on inland lakes. The boring visits to the outer Bahamas, Turk and Caicos and the filthy squalor of the Dominican Republic (with corrupt officials everywhere) were just as bad.
All-in-all this book cured me of my dreams of ocean sailing.

It was an enjoyable piece. I expected, possibly more of the cruising area and less of some of the technical issues. But I understand the issues as I have been sailing for 40 years. It was not as well organized as the first book which I very much enjoyed.
I have mixed reviews about these books so far. My wife and I have been planning a similar adventure for many years and I've read quite a few books about sailing around in various parts of the world. The books always get me excited to start our adventure. These books are different. They don't paint a very inviting picture because they focus on the hardships and negative aspects of every location. In the books, they mention that they aren't very social and they like to avoid crowds. I wonder if they are trying to discourage other cruisers from adding to the crowds they despise????
Very well written and full of interesting local insights. David Beaupre and his wife Wendy make their journey through the islands and tell about their stops at each harbor along the way. I enjoyed their balance of sailing details and experiences with other cruising yachts along the way. Very enjoyable read!
...although I may never look at meat the same way again (you'll just have to read the book). Some great drama combined with a healthy portion of interesting locales and several laugh out loud moments and you have a very enjoyable read. Also compelled me to pull up all these places on Google Earth.
I WANT MORE! More of Quest and the trip! Lovely account of their voyage through the Caribbean... I would say that they instilled me courage to start learning how to sail... that's for sure!
Really engaging to read how Dave and Wendy work through many events during their voyage. Situations with challenging people, equipment, food, navigating, weather, waves, fatigue and anchorages. For a novice sailor I find it consoling to read how its not all sipping margaritas and lying in a hammock. Its a true adventure with a lot of resourcefulness and good fortune.
David and Wendy write an excellent account of their trip from the Bahamas to the Dominican Republic. As a kid, I lived on Rum Cay for a few months while our yacht was anchored off the beach. We went through a few storms as described in this book. My sense is that if the story he tells matches the experiences we had, he must be writing what he sees with interest and accuracy. The beat to the Caribbean from the Bahamas is brutal. They write of it in terms that make one sense that it is tough and worth it.

An impressive story. The tale of Custom in Provenciales, T&C is classic. I don't doubt a word of it is fiction. Next up is their book about the Caribbean where I have spent many years sailing. Can't wait to compare experiences.
