I have almost 1600 Kindle books in my library and can't believe this got lost. I entered her name in my library and found the series just waiting for me. Can't wait to start the next one.

This is a stand alone as far as our main character's, but you are left wondering what the King has in store for this clan. In reading the blurb for the next book of the series, that will be continued.

The relationship with the H/h built slowly as did their romance. I dislike secrets kept, but our H realizes he maybe on the wrong side and you see him have a change of heart.

Their is a lot of suspense, a nasty villain, twists of who the next Guardian will be, and some magical events, along with sadness.

This is a very unique story and not your normal Highland Clan fighting, which I enjoyed. There is very mild lovemaking within marriage and only once near the very end, rated 2.5 out of 5. Just enough to feel their love for each other. We have no cheating, no cliffhanger for our couple, HEA and a romance that builds slowly.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was an interesting start to what I hope will be a good new series. Our H is half Scottish but has been living in England since he was 12. He is a spy for King Edward and is given the task of getting the Highland Targe from Scotland by the King. He is lead to a small clan in the Highlands where he meets the h. The h is cousin to the daughters of the clan chief and she works hard for her clan. The H insinuates himself within the clan so that he can find out about the Targe but he is very drawn to the h. As they fall in love they have to deal with all sorts of obstacles. There is also the paranormal element of the gifts of the guardian of the Targe, which makes for an interesting angle.

I loved the way the author built the relationship between the main characters, it was really believable and you could see how the H changed because of his love for the h. I loved the fact that the book wasn't full gratuitous sex scenes and that they waited until they were married. Too many historicals are spoilt by unnecessary sex scenes that are off-putting and detract from the story. I like using my imagination and this author has allowed us the freedom to enjoy the true romance of the book.
Luckily my grandpa was Scottish along with other relatives so I could get into the flow of the book with it's Scottish terms. I had bought the audio version to go with it, but it has a download issue, so I just read the book, standalone. I do have the next book in the series so I will go to book two after a break, but if I hadn't already bought it, not sure I would buy it now. It was ok, nothing more, nothing less. I will get to book two, just not right away
Laurin Wittig is one of my most favorite authors. She is one of the few authors that I have an 'auto buy'! Laurin has a voice that is unparalleled and weaves a breathtaking story.

Highlander Betrayed is another example of her beautiful writing style. Strong, well developed characters and a great story line. I love Rowan, she's strong but likable. Although Nicholas starts out as a bad guy, I rooted for him throughout the book because he was so lovable. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series!
Ms. Laurin Wittig does it again puts out another magnificent read as always and never disappoints. It has all the elements you want in a five star novel love,magic, mystery, intrigue, murder, conspiracy,adventure, and mayhem

It's cast of characters consists of the hero Nicholas fitz Hugh born out of violence in By a Scottish Mother who couldn't stand the sight of him as he grew up looking exactly like the man who raped her and an English father who beat Nicholas up the first time he met him again another parent telling him he never wanted to see him again. Somehow he proved himself and became a favorite and heartless favorite spy for King Edward Longshanks of England.

The heroine Rowan MacGregor, who is orphaned at a young age with no memory of her parents death,and come to live with the Mac Alpin Clan. The chief Kenneth is her Uncle and his wife Lady Elspeth current guardian of the Targe an ancient powerful relic and protector of the clan. Also it is believed the next guardian is to be their daughter Jeanette, who is also Rowan's cousin, although they all grew up like sisters as also the youngest flirty daughter Scotia.

There is also another evil spy Archie who has been Nicolas spy partner for the past ten years. Not a nice guy is all I can say. Another thing I love about Ms.Wittig's books is she always has wonderful secondary characters as Mac Alpin warriors Duncan and grumpy illiam who both pulled at my heartstrings. Of course Nicholas who is sent to steal the Targe although he has no idea what it is or does. He does eventually switch teams and sees his evil ways are wrong as he falls in love with the beautiful Rowan. Due to the fact he sneaks in the castle on a string of lies and when that can of worms opens up Rowan is broken hearted and the chief wants to hang Nicholas! Can he be trusted,saved or forgiven? What is the Targe so powerful believed to protect the clan for so many generations? You will have no read thismfabulous book to get those answers.

I loved this book so many clever facets which is truly amazing. I can't wait to read the next two books in this series -Highlander Avenged and Highlander Redeemed. As always another brilliant enchanting read and I truly loved every page of Highlander Betrayed.
