Nightfall A Dark Age Dawning Novel Ellen Connor 9780425241691 Books Reviews
I can't even begin to describe all things wrong with this story. Too many details are left out to give this story any credibility. The first chapter or two, start of interesting enough. Then all these random characters are introduced and story moves chaotically around. Not enough back story to explain the characters actions. Just skip it.
hot sexy cover! Yeah. Interesting characters. It ran very much like a movie and you could pick it up and put it down easily. I enjoyed the style of writing and creative approach to the post apocalypse plot line. I like a little less tension between my protagonists, so I give it a 4, but it reads fast with strength and style. Reminds me of the Sci-Fi channel's afternoon movies.
This book had an interesting premise and I did enjoy it for the most part. I liked the interaction between Mason and Jenna. They had a lot of chemistry and there was a good deal of sexual tension. I also liked the interaction with Tru.
However even though I liked the first book I didn't like it enough to continue to pay $9.99 for the eBook to read the other two in the series. I just didn't leave me that interested to know what else happens. I don't really care that much.
I enjoyed this book more the second time around. The writing is choppy, almost frantic, but maybe that is the tone the author was going for. It makes the plot off putting at first. You have to read this one with patience as the story unfolds piece by piece.
Throughout most of this book, I kept thinking that this would make a way better movie than it did a novel. As a fantasy/scifi, it had too much paranormal romance elements. As a romance, it had way too much fantasy/scifi and focus on other characters, even shifting perspectives. At best, fantasy/scifi/romance has a synergy that makes it better than any of the genres alone. In this case, it just felt jarring like two stories mashed together into one with the seams showing. The parts that worked best the idea presented for the end of the world as we know it change from science to magic and the ragtag group. The parts that worked least the paranormal romance aspect of mates and special telepathy between the hero and heroine just did not fit with the end of the world and ragtag group story.
STORY BRIEF
The author name Ellen Connor consists of a writing team of two people (Ann Aguirre/Ava Gray and Carrie Lofty). They were inspired by the bad-ass female sci-fi characters in The Terminator and Alien movies. The name Connor is from the character Sarah Connor in The Terminator. Ellen is from Ellen Ripley in Alien. This book has a feeling like the Terminator movie the apocalyptic state on earth with dangerous creatures (demon dogs) trying to kill all humans. This story is a small group of humans trying to survive. Anything with computer technology no longer works including most cars. The only method of communication is the old fashioned analog radio - but the established radio stations are not broadcasting. The reader gets the feeling that there are no humans left in the cities - and any who survived are doing so like the group we are reading about.
Years ago Jenna's father Mitch was predicting this apocalyptic disaster. Mason was a troubled teen who was taken in and helped by Mitch. Mitch trained Mason to prepare for it. Before he died Mitch asked Mason to promise to take care of his daughter Jenna when it happened. Now the event has happened. There's no time to explain so Mason kidnaps Jenna, tying her up and taking her to his cabin in the forest. Having seen the demon dogs she now understands. Mason has enough food for the two of them to stay in the cabin for the winter. Then a group of five people arrive at the cabin asking for help. Mason is reluctant but Jenna lets them in and insists they stay. They discover a scientist Chris at a research station several miles away. He is broadcasting on an old radio saying he has plenty of food. The group decides to travel to Chris. Mason gives everyone guns and ammo to shoot the demon dogs along the way.
There is magic involved. When someone is bit by a demon dog, they react in different ways. Some become demon dogs, some die, others become shape shifters. One of the group is a little girl Penny who has magic abilities.
REVIEWER'S OPINION
This was ok as an escape, slightly above average. It felt like an action movie - lots of action and suspense. The plot is simple - good guys fighting bad guys. There were some sex scenes - I liked the first one best - sex after adrenaline stress. The others were pretty good. I liked the happy ending - it was fulfilling. There's an interesting collection of characters. I enjoyed Tru the most because he changed the most. He had been a self-mutilating (cutting) Goth kid. But put him in this dangerous world of kill or be killed and he became an excellent shooter, strong, reliable, and heroic. I liked seeing his change.
To give something 4 stars I want to feel "I really like it" at the end which was not my feeling. But it was still good.
DATA
Story length 327 pages. Swearing language strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language strong. Number of sex scenes 5. Estimated number of sex scene pages 12. Setting mid 21st century Oregon and the Rocky Mountains. Copyright 2011. Genre apocalyptic paranormal romantic suspense.
Ellen Connor has written an excellent paranormal post-apocalyptic romance trilogy guaranteed to push all the right buttons if this is your genre. In her world the Western part of the USA lives in an ignorant state of mind, unaware of the fuel shortages and other problems that people in the East have been dealing with. When our heroine, Jenna, gets kidnapped, she finds herself on the edge of survival with only her kidnapper (he had a good reason!) to keep her alive. The first book, Nightfall, is action-packed and steam-saturated. The ending actually feels a bit anti-climactic, because of how jam-packed the plot is. Books two and three are with different characters and take place three years and then 12 years after the "fall."
What is really cool about Ellen Connor She is actually the writing team Ann Aguirre and Carrie Lofty. Both are amazing writers, and this series is one of my favorites! For more paranormal/dystopian books by these authors check out Time Travel by Carrie Lofty and Enclave by Ann Aguirre.
