This was a weird, weird book.

For being about a racist German magickian and scientist, there sure was a LOT of Christian dogma, ritual, and iconography throughout.

There's gotta be something more to this book, but I'm afraid either due to the age of the text, or my own lack of referential knowledge, I walked away totally confused as to what the point of this book's existence was/is.

TOTAL SPOILER:
Basically, the protagonist (who is ALWAYS referred to by both his first and last names--Weird!) goes to a remote Italian village, drunkenly rapes the innkeeper's daughter, talks to her as if she were his dead Poodle (literally calls her is dead dog's name, since she doesn't understand German, and he considers her barely human, a poor little inferior underling), goes to the idiotic American Christian missionary in the village, tells him that he himself (the American missionary) is the reincarnation of Elijah, the biblical prophet and his congregation needs to start drinking a lot of wine and whipping the hell out of each other and themselves; then tells the innkeeper's daughter, while she is in a hypnotic state that he easily induces in her whenever he wants, that she is a living saint and will manifest the stigmata of Christ. She does this, the American missionary touts her living saint status, the German's evil manipulation of the entire village comes to fruition, and the living saint has herself crucified!? The protagonist returns to his life of well-heeled leisure in swankier parts of Italy, meets up with a hot friend, sees a movie, after which she confides in him that she wants to have a baby, and the dang book ends!

I mean it: what the HECK does this book mean???

The Sorcerer Apprentice Hanns Heinz Ewers Ludwig Lewisohn 9781417905805 Books Reviews

i consider this to be a psychological thriller. it has a good plot, though i am unsatisfied with the ending. the main person is seduced by his chances to manipulate people. but how well can he control what he started? i can't give away more. sorry. but it's interesting read. i love manipulation (in books, in life not unless i'm doing it)
The Sorceress Apprentice is a fun novel, but you ought to approach it as purely horror. I went into this book thinking of it as a philosophical piece, and spent a lot of time confused and looking for insight on human nature where there really is none. In Hanns Heinz Ewers world, human nature is comically dark and graphically horrible. Towards the end of this novel you see it for what it is, but the author's style is a lot more polished in his latter work, Alraune.

It should be stated that it is not necessary to have read The Sorcerer's Apprentice to read Alraune. The books are only part of a trilogy in that they follow the largely unrelated misadventures of a recurring protagonist, Frank Braun. Alraune is the better novel by far, although I did appreciate having the context of Frank Braun from The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
