The Glory of the Empress Admiral Book 3 eBook Sean Danker

I read the first chapter for free on a books website. There were a few concerns, but it seemed like a good book. The second chapter was kind of interesting. But the rest is stunningly awful.

I'm a tech guy and the tech in this book is staggeringly bad. I won't spoil the book, but if two space ships are close enough for a guy to jump between, there isn't ANY amount of stealth that will hide one from the other. But the worst bit is that there is just no concept of where they are and what they are doing and how long it takes to get there.

But I could even get past that for a decent story and some characters. But there wasn't, as far as I could tell, a story here. The characters were rather simplistic and there were so many thrown at you at the same time. It's really hard to tell them apart.

What's worse is that I had no idea what was going on half the time.

Maybe this redeems itself at some point, but I just couldn't force my way through any more to get to that point.

There's a LOT of truly excellent military science fiction out there. This is not one of them.

The Glory of the Empress Admiral Book 3 eBook Sean Danker Reviews

So first off, I have to say that, despite the previous novel, Free Space, ending on a massive cliffhanger, The Glory Of The Empress is in fact a prequel of sorts to Admiral, taking place a few weeks before that novel. It provides backstory to the characters Ibuki and Kladinova, who were both introduced in Free Space.

They're definitely a lot more interesting as characters this time around, but this novel seems... unnecessary at this point in the series. It doesn't add any big revelations to anything the reader knows of the series. It also recasts the events of the end of Admiral dramatically differently, to the point that the end of that novel doesn't make sense.

It's a good war story about a ship stranded in hostile country, but there's nothing new that it brings to that genre. It's enjoyable, but enjoyable like a Michael Bay movie - it falls apart a bit the more you think about it.

I think Danker has promise, but he really needs some better alpha readers to help corral his instincts. He tends to get really scattershot on the plot elements he introduces, and can't quite pull them together well.

Full Disclosure Berkley Publishing sent me a free advance reading copy of this novel (and Admiral and Free Space) because I won a giveaway on Goodreads. Even though it was an advance proof copy, it did arrive after the publishing date. That being said, I don't even remember entering this giveaway specifically, so it had no effect on my review.
The Evgardian Empire has developed a small star carrier with experimental technology that allow pilots to be linked to their fighters. The fighters and the ship are difficult to detect, as long as they work as designed Oen Bjorn provides technical support to one of the pilots, a pilot so intense on improving her skills, that she ups the dangerous drugs that allow her contact with her fighter. The Lydia Bennett is tasked, for The Glory of the Empress (trade from Ace), to keep pirates occupied, including one on a ship so huge it is difficult to destroy. There’s a traitor who trained on the Lydia’s systems, and he is providing information to help locate the Lydia and destroy her and her four fighters. Sean Danker tells an exciting tale that is a prequel to his Admiral series.
Really enjoyed this book
Great military space series with extremely clever snd witty dialog. Nice to see how this book fit in with the prior two. Hope the series goes on for a long time
I loved this book. It hooked me right away with a group of complex, sympathetic characters thrown into a series of situations that rapidly devolve from embarrassing to unnerving to outright terrifying. There are some surprising reveals throughout the store that alternatively clear up things that have seemed odd before, or complicate the situation going forward, or both. The battles are great, the scope of the action and the consequences of the characters' decisions keep ramping up steadily, and the book is just dripping with tension. Once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down, because I genuinely cared about what happened to the characters next.

As I get older, I'm getting pickier as a reader. Life is too short to waste on bad books. This one was great - I'm glad I gave it a shot. Strongly recommended.
OK to best enjoy this book it helps to have read the other books in the series. It also helps to have read the other books by this author published under the name Sean Danker-Smith. It would be better if the book had devoted more time to explaining the Evangardian Universe and the Harbinger virus to those not already familiar with those story concepts.

That being said I enjoyed the fast pace of the story. It seemed like almost every page was a cliffhanger making me want to read just one more page to see how it turns out. The concept of the super-fast space fighters was interesting and made the space based combats interesting. The man to man fighting chapters (can you call it ground combat when it takes place in a space station?) were different but they were also very fast paced and fun to read.

The sexual harassment subplot was a bit hard to follow and it did not add much to the enjoyment of the book for me but it is a concept out of todays headlines.

Story is fast paced, full of action, and has interesting characters - I enjoyed it very much.
