Julia Butler brings us a complex book about a very controversial subject that unravels and takes you on a wild journey. In a way, the author herself is an artist and her song is Katherine's story. The starts out talking about our main character, Katherine's, miraculous origins from her conception onward to now. She became a musical prodigy who rose to the top while facing forbidden love with a much older professor and married man, family secrets, the problems with social status, and twists and turns no one would have been able to have anticipated. The fact that all the characters are related in one way, shape, or form is one of the MANY great things about this story. These days you usually have to have a complete series for that complexity. This adds a flair to the novel that not many usually have today.I honestly could not put this book down and give it an honest 5-Star Rating. I recommend this for anyone who needs a new romance or a novel that will make you think and is written in a classy way. You will not be disappointed in this great read!

Look, there simply HAS to be someone out there to report that the emperor has no clothes, when the emperor has no clothes! More publications of this quality might actually succeed in bringing the online publishing industry to its knees and returning everyone who is even minimally serious about literature back to the intermediation of even the second rate limited-to-no experience editors who managed to nab jobs in the publishing houses of progressively dwindling quality in our culture. [And did I mention music - which the novel is at least theoretically about? No I didn't mention music, because I'm pretty certain the writer doesn't have much if any first hand knowledge about that topic]
Bottom line it's a free country; everybody gets to publish a book if they want to. But the good news is, in that free country, nobody has to read the bad ones. Pass on this one.
Julia Butler’s The Last Encore is a lyrical romance. Taking her inspiration from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Butler weaves a fantastic tale of desire, love, and betrayal. Carrying through her musical theme, each chapter is given an Opus number, such as Opus 1, Opus 1, etc. And each is labeled with a musical term that describes the tone or emotion of the chapter. It sounds too, too clever, but the device works, for her novel is much like a musical composition with infinite variations, surprising themes cropping up, and a mix of emotions running rampant. Essentially, this is the love story of Katia, an accomplished pianist and her love affair with Daniel, a much younger man. Each of them has enough backstory to fill two or three novels, plus the secondary characters too have their secrets, lies, and backstories. Just when you are certain you have the plot figured out, a new turn takes you in another direction of this complicated story. And Butler uses words skillfully, for her lyrical storytelling fits the tale she weaves. The Last Encore is a quick read, but it is a satisfying, complex read. As audience members shout at the end of a moving performance, “Bravo!”
"The Last Encore" by Julia Butler is a sonnet of Romantic mystery, a delight that appeals and seduces even as it wraps around you in lyrical splendor. Like the strands of the Moonlight Sonata itself, this book has highs and lows, valleys and peaks that pull the characters to and fro as easily as the music.
Butler has composed this novel broken into pieces and instructions like the great classical works of old, with a Prelude, a Concerto, the Polyphony and so much more - ending, of course, with the Finale. Katherine is a lovely Russian student, learning the piano under the tutelage of Vitaly Prohorov, both the keys and the ways of love. Soon after starting private lessons, they fall into a passionate affair despite her youth, his age or his marriage. Katherine's fiery hair, beautiful blue eyes and unstoppable spirit are at the heart of this novel of love and loss. Vitaly, so dear to her, was not to stay - for reasons she would only find out much, much later.
Decades, lives and continents later, Katherine finally finds her fate and her soul in Los Angeles, at the behest of new friend, Lily, a friend who has graced Katherine's life before - unknown, unseen -but hardly unfelt.
This novel twists and turns with all the good grace of a romantic mystery. The writing is superb with carefully crafted characters.
The Last Encore is an engaging, romantic, and at times dark love story that spans many generations and locations. The story has many layers and in many ways plays out as more of a mystery of deep secrets and emotions that help shape how we may see the world and the times that we are living in. The author has a rich and beautiful way with word delivery. Katherine's story is raw and difficult, and not an easy subject to develop, but the author truly surprised me and left me working through and understanding the unfolding drama and suspense that is created from the story. I really enjoyed and connected with Lily, you feel a bit of sadness for her, but you truly get to understand her from the history and connections she makes as everything unfolds. The Last Encore is an emotional story with some difficult subjects and delicate matters that the author handles with a lot of beauty in her prose and a great deal of depth to the plot and narrative.
