When I found this book on goodreads, I gotta admit I was pretty excited to read it (so of course it was the last book to arrive in the mail nearly 2 weeks after I ordered smh). But yeah, I love it when authors put a new spin on the Satan mythos, especially when they make him out to be very different than how he’s portrayed in religion. Waywalkers totally delivered on that front and more. Not only was good ol’ Lucifer given a personality makeover, but so was religion in general, with all the major gods of many religions made out to be one family and related to one another. I thought Webb did an amazing job of re-imagining how all that would work and it all made sense as you kept reading the book and were given more insight into this new, but familiar, world.

The story was pretty fast paced, since it mostly consisted of Sam running around trying to figure out who killed his sister, why she was killed, why people are now trying to kill him, etc, etc. So it was nice to not really have a dull moment; you just kept moving along with Sam. It engaged me as a reader and kept me interested.

Webb also did a good job of seamlessly inserting memories from Sam’s past into the story as well, giving the reader more insight and background knowledge of Sam and this world she created for the series.

Anyway, I don’t wanna say too much plot wise cuz it’s kinda nice to find clues, and see how things fit as Sam figures stuff out. I will say that it wasn’t boring (at least in my opinion) and I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel.

Waywalkers Catherine Webb 9781904233213 Books Reviews

i LOVED this book. it was interesting, page turning, and inteeligent. I could hardly believe the author was only 15 (?) when she wrote it. I could barely put it down. I can't WAIT to get the sequel
I found this book excellent. Not only was it written in such a way that you are kept interested throughout, but the ideas it suggests are amazing. A truly original look at the gods of old and new.
What a fantastic book! I've owned this for years and years and its a book (along with all the others by Webb) which I return to again and again. The protagonist is superb as is the world-building, and the story is original and captivating. Webb is one of my favorite authors. Seriously, you'll miss out NOT reading this wonderful story!
I pondered whether to buy "Waywalkers" for many a day. Should I buy something from the teen fiction section of my bookshop? Should I take a risk on something written by (shudder) a teen prodigy? Well, in the end I did and I'm glad of it. "Waywalkers" is an enjoyable read of the fantasy-meets-modern-world variety.

Sam Linnfer is leading a quiet existence as a university research assistant when a call from the police sends his life into a spin. A friend has been murdered, he is under suspicion, and as he begins to investigate he finds that his supernatural kin are up to some truly scary plotting. The book is essentially one long chase, with the reader gradually learning more about Sam and what's really going on as our hero pauses for breath before being pursued yet again.

I have to say, Webb's youth does show in some clunky writing ("immaculately proportioned cavern"?). But she has a talent for observation/imagination that is expressed in some excellent descriptions of places, the plot is really good, and Sam is interesting and sympathetic without ever being too powerful or perfect.

I'm going to assume that Webb has picked up the mythology that loads her plot as a picturesque background most readers can relate to, rather than that she has Something To Say on the deep and meaningful side of life. As an action adventure with a supernatural twist, "Waywalkers" is a fun read that I found quite haunting. If I could, I would give it three and a half stars.
I first read this when I was in high school. The thing that I enjoy about this author is that her first book was published when she was 14. Catherine Webb's books are complex with a touch of depth that you don't normally find in a teenagers writing.
Catherine Webb and her various other identities is/are my hero(es). Startling clarity and wisdom for one so young (or old).
An enjoyable book, although the premise isn't a startlingly new one. Good pacing and a sympathetic protagonist in the same vein as MAtthew Swift.
