This novel is such a fun read. A tiny girl proposes(after catching a small piglet for her own, for a pet in her father's castle) to a tall Highland lad when she is told by her older sister how it is done.
Years later, she is on her way to meet her match--as ordered by her father--and is waylaid by a band of blue-painted Highland warriors, the tallest of which has declared he will marry her in vengeance to the Scots lord with whom he has a grievance, suspecting him of the destruction of his home and the death of his father.
What follows is one of the funniest courtships I've read--the young heroine shows courage--and a penchant for negotiation--with her husband-to-be. The warriors are both tickled at her unusual behavior, and impressed by the fact she shows no fear of her fierce future mate.
She charms everyone she meets, but not until she is attacked from someone he would not have suspected would hurt her that he comes to realize he loves her.
The book has wonderful pacing, and I'm as charmed by this young lady as the characters are. With courage, compassion, and innate innocence, she slipped into my heart, and has become one of my favorite characters.
Thank you, Julie Garwood, for this lovely story.

The Wedding Julie Garwood 9780743467216 Books Reviews

I first read this book about 20 years ago and decided to give it another read to see if I still liked it as much as I remembered. I definitely do. There are historical inaccuracies I am sure in this book (I spotted a couple) but, in this case, who cares? I was so enchanted with the story of 'Connor and Brenna that I really didn't care. Their first meeting (when she was about 6) was hilarious. There next meeting was ll years later and it, too, was funny as well. This book really has it all...drama, humor, and a mystery. The dialogue is great and the chemistry between the hero and heroine is off the charts. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a light, fast-paced read with characters that you will love.

Sexual situations may offend some readrs
I have to admit... I purchased this with a slip of the thumb. Not that I don't love the book, I do, I just own it in hard cover.

The Wedding is in the same world as The Bride. It takes place several years after The Bride ended.

it starts off with Brenna as a little girl chasing down a piglet to keep it as her own pets because their family dog did not have enough puppies for each of the children to have one of their very own. She slips and falls in the pig pen and is being chased around by the mama pig. Connor runs over and saves her and she decides that she's going to marry him because he saved her.

Fast forward 15 years or so. Brennan is on her way to an arranged marriage to a Laird who is ruthless and Evil. Connor finds out that she is on her way and in an act of war against that Laird he steals her and marries her for his own.

What ensues is the hilarity of a young innocent well-meaning but slightly chaotic English girl trying to make her way in the world of the Scottish Highlands. To go along with this there is the danger, the intrigue, and the murderous attempts of the people responsible for the murder of Connor's father 20 years prior.

The ending left openings for several of the secondary characters to have their own novels. I cannot wait to find out who's next in this Saga!
I love this series! The inner dialogue of these characters is hilarious. We have a great heroine who does not conform to the demure, obedient female mold of those times. A dominant highlander male who is exasperated with his wife's antics but loves, treasures and protects her above all else. Just fantastic! Still not better than The Bride though.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and liked everything about it. I was surprised that it got some bad reviews, but not everyone has the same tastes. I thought this book was one of Garwood's best ones and both my husband and I have read it a few times and never got tired of it. I was definitely happy to be able to replace my old, tattered paperback with the version.

Garwood didn't go into as much historical detail as some historical romance writers, but I didn't notice any glaring anachronisms, either. Garwood's writing mechanics were excellent, as is usual with her books.

I thought the plot was more character driven, with the focus on the developing relationship between the hero and heroine, as opposed to a plot driven story with lots of action. The main protagonists were a slightly eccentric heroine and a gruff hero who didn't know what hit him after he married the heroine. She talks circles around him and his men, and manages to capture their hearts. I enjoyed the back and forth banter between the hero and heroine and found it amusing. I think it's the type of light banter and dialogue reminiscent of the old screwball comedies that one either loves or hates.

I also liked the characterization of the heroine; she had an innocent naivety coupled with native shrewdness and intelligence. Her feelings were easily hurt, but she didn't hold a grudge, had a warm heart and looked for the best in people, sometimes giving them the benefit of the doubt when they didn't deserve it. I didn't feel that she was a "too stupid to live" heroine; she was young, insecure, and was desperate to please her husband's family so they would like her, but she would only be pushed so far.

The hero had been raised as a warrior, believing that showing softer emotions made a leader look weak. He has been raised to believe that a leader had to be an authoritarian figure who gave orders, expected them to be obeyed, didn't give explanations or put up with being questioned, contradicted, or disobeyed. Otherwise, he felt it would make him look like a weak leader and that he would not be respected by his men or clan. When he married the heroine, he intended to remain in control and aloof, and he expected her to obey him at all times, without ever questioning him. It was a pleasure to see him alternately stern, infuriated, bemused, befuddled, aghast, warm and loving, as he and the heroine developed a loving relationship. I didn't think he was a jerk. He seemed to be a product of his time and circumstances as far as his beliefs in how he needed to act, but he had a lot of good qualities. He thought daughters should be treated lovingly and not sold to the highest bidder, that it was the duty of the strong to look after the weak, and that women and children should never be abused. He was loyal to his people, and even as a child, he wouldn't leave the injured behind to save himself. His people were loyal to him and respected him, which was an indication of his character. Even when he thought he should be firm with the heroine, he didn't have the heart to deliberately hurt her feelings, he tried to understand her and he was never abusive. When he did things that upset her, like leaving her belongings behind, it was early in the story when he didn't understand the finer points of communicating with one's wife and not doing things that would upset a wife. He wasn't being mean or sadistic; he just didn't have a clue about being a husband. From the beginning, he started to try to understand what the heroine needed from him and then he made every effort to adjust to marriage and to balance the tenderness of a husband with the firmness of a warrior.

This was a light, enjoyable book that kept me engaged and entertained. When I reread it today, I was in a "hard to please" slump and was having trouble deciding what type of book I was in the mood for. I just wanted something that was not too demanding but not too light, something that would make me smile and put me in a better mood. This book was perfect. I highly recommend this book to others looking for the same qualities in a book.
